Serving her community and all cheesecake lovers, Eva Johnson is the proud small-business owner of 2CheeseCake Cuties, a food truck in Austin, Texas. Throughout her journey as an entrepreneur, Johnson has garnered success, lessons in the business world, and her own advice for future entrepreneurs.

Girls For Business had the chance to interview this amazing woman about what life is like as a small-business owner and how she made it to where she is today!

Q: Tell me a bit about yourself.

Johnson, originally from Waco, Texas, has been an Austinite for the past 6 years. She has two children, a 17-year-old boy who finds joy in playing basketball and a 6-year-old daughter who Johnson considers her princess.

Q: Give me a background of 2CheeseCake Cuties. What prompted you to start this business?

Johnson was working at a demanding job where she reached her peak and was struggling to find her purpose. With a hobby of making cheesecakes for her friends and family, one of her friends suggested Johnson start selling cheesecake due to her talent. After discussing the logistics of the business with her friend, Johnson was convinced starting this business was the move for her and began planning her vision and goals of 2CheeseCake Cuties.

Q: What was the backstory behind the name, 2CheeseCake Cuties?

Johnson and her daughter represent the 2 CheeseCake Cuties. Her daughter inspired Johnson in starting this business because she wanted to have something to pass down to her, so she incorporated her daughter as well into the name.

Q: Can you describe your journey as you navigated operating a small business?

While Johnson acknowledges that the journey has been challenging and stressful, she acknowledges that it is worth it. Starting out by selling cheesecakes out of her trunk and driving to Waco weekly, Johnson eventually started finding local events in Austin to sell cheesecake and provide samples. After networking in Austin, Johnson eventually stumbled upon an empty car lot that had been converted into a food truck lot. She purchased a tent and got to business before purchasing a trailer 8 months later. The trailer was remodeled, and she’s been running the business from there ever since.

Q: What were some challenges you faced running a business?

Johnson feels that the biggest challenge is losing too much money, whether it be from making too much product at events or getting told no from different vendors. She also encountered challenges while navigating her way through building a business where she had to start from ground zero, but through books and various resources, she gained the knowledge to be more successful.

Q: What do you think the most rewarding part of entrepreneurship is?

Being able to put a smile on peoples’ faces is the most rewarding part of running a business for Johnson. Having the motto of “For the love of happiness,” Johnson strives to give people happiness – even if it’s just for a moment – through cheesecakes. She passes out leftover cheesecakes to the homeless, and a core memory that has kept her going was when a homeless man threw his sign down to eat the cheesecakes. Moments like these are what remind Johnson of the power of her business.

Q: What do you think the special charm of your business is?

To Johnson, the special charm of 2CheeseCake Cuties is the love that it radiates. Johnson ensures to get to know her customers and treat them like friends. Moreover, Johnson believes that the effort put into her business is what sets her apart; she takes inspiration and gets the drive from her grandmother, whose recipe is used for the cheesecakes and who worked tirelessly at a glass plant for 26 years without missing a day or being late.

Q: How do you balance the different aspects of your business, from baking to marketing?

Johnson admits that handling all of the aspects of a business can be extremely challenging, especially when it’s a one-person job. From making the cheesecakes, doing the marketing, running the trailer, and doing deliveries, Johnson has lost lots of sleep. However, she believes that when one is determined to do something, they’ll get it done.

Q: Tell me about some recent business successes you’ve had.

Currently, 2CheeseCake Cuties is in the process of partnering up with a store, where Johnson will eventually be able to sell her cheesecakes at convenient stores. Johnson also hopes to start working with restaurants and more stores to get the brand name out there.

Q: Do you have any goals or milestones you’d like 2CheeseCake Cuties to hit?

Johnson currently works with recovering drug addicts and her ultimate goal is to build a sober living house in the next 2-3 years. Johnson hopes to expand her business to a storefront alongside the trailer as well.  This will enable the recovering addicts to work at 2CheeseCake Cuties and establish a good work history, allowing them to buy housing and find a job they truly love. With the sober living home and employment opportunities, Johnson hopes for 2CheeseCake Cuties to be a stepping stone in helping recovering addicts receive a second chance at life.

Q: How did 2CheeseCake Cuties have to adapt to unprecedented times like the pandemic?

With everything being shut down, Johnson felt it was a struggle to operate her business during the pandemic. While Johnson had to make many sacrifices during the period, she was able to put cheesecakes on people’s tables while they were with their families and push through the tough times.

Q: What is some advice you would like to give to aspiring female entrepreneurs?

Johnson’s advice is “No matter who tells you know or the struggles you face, keep going.” Johnson emphasizes the importance of pushing through and keep going because the journey of entrepreneurship will not be easy and nothing will be handed to you. If you want to reach a goal, you will keep striving to make sure you reach it.

Q: Tell me about something you wish you knew before starting a business.

Johnson wished she had taken business classes before starting 2CheeseCake Cuties to gain the knowhow on entrepreneurship. However, she still appreciates the route she did take as it was interesting to learn the lessons of business throughout the process and helped her strive for her goals.

Q: In all your years of running 2CheeseCake Cuties, what has been your happiest memory from working in business?

Johnson reflected and believes that the happiest memory has been watching the homeless man eating her cheesecake as mentioned above. Every time a customer tells her that her family loved her cheesecake, Johnson finds joy in knowing that she was able to bring happiness to a family.
