DECA, short for Distributive Education Clubs of America, is dedicated to equipping high school and college students with the skills necessary for career success. With over 262,000 student members worldwide and more than 25,000 advancing to state and international competitions this past year, DECA’s reach is vast.
DECA offers over 60 competitive events at the high school level and more than 25 at the collegiate level across categories like Business Management and Administration, Hospitality and Tourism, Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Personal Financial Literacy. Events fall into two types: roleplay and written presentations. In roleplay events, competitors—either alone or in pairs—take a multiple-choice exam in advance and prepare a case study on the day of the event to present to a judge. Written events allow teams of up to three to showcase a startup idea or research project.
These competitions help students develop critical business skills. Competitors gain real-world experience and practical knowledge, making DECA a valuable addition to a resume. Members undecided about their major also find DECA helpful for exploring interests, building networks, and enjoying the experience with friends at international conventions.
Information about DECA’s events and competitions is available on the official DECA website. Regional district competitions help students prepare for the State Career Development Conference and the International Career Development Conference (ICDC). At these levels, students receive feedback and learn valuable lessons in communication and networking with industry professionals.
Beyond competitions, DECA offers business mixers, workshops, and events where students learn directly from professionals, providing insights into business careers.
In all, DECA offers tremendous benefits for students seeking a close-knit, supportive community. The main focus is preparation for events and travel logistics. So, are you ready to join DECA?
