Business financing is an important part in the success of a business. This allows business owners to be able to pay for inventory and equipment, hire staff, and pay off loans. Without business financing, there is essentially no way to expand the business into something larger.

According to the Revenue, a financial institution, the Federal Reserve small business survey found that 10-15% of firms seek external financing to grow their business.

There are three categories that can be derived from the broad topic of business financing: equity capital, debt capital, and specialty capital.

Equity capital is when a business trades a piece of ownership for cash. This can come from an angel investor, who is an individual who invests their own money for equity. Venture capitalists are a group of people who pool in money to invest for equity. A shareholder is an individual who invests for a share of a stock. Businesses usually pursue equity capital since there is no interest to be paid and there are fewer risks. However, a step back in this financing is that there will be more business partners since investors share a part of the business.

Another category of business financing is debt capital. This is the most common type of financing because it is exactly how it sounds— a business borrows money and it is paid back eventually. However with this option, high interest rates may be a problem considering the profits.

The last category is speciality capital. This is obtained through controlling funds without actually paying for them. This can be seen as very desirable because it costs nothing, but may be a difficult process to start this process.

There are various aspects to help manage business financing which eventually leads to a financial plan. Budgeting, accounting, tax planning, and risk management help lead to the success of the business. Ultimately, staying on top of managing finances is very helpful in the short and long run.
